TQ3104SW MEETING HOUSE LANE 577-1/64/500 (South West side) 20/08/71 Nos.1, 2 AND 3


House, now shops. Late C18 or early C19. Although built as a single house on a corner, the following description will break down according to the street addresses for the sake of clarity. Stucco scored to imitate ashlaring. Roof of tile, partly obscured by parapet. EXTERIOR: 2 storeys with dormers. 3-window range to each elevation. All windows are flat arched. C19 shop front to ground floor of Nos 1 and 2; the first-floor windows have 6 x 6 sashes of original design and the dormer above 3 x 3 sashes of original design. The shop front on the east-facing elevation continues around the corner and ground floor of No.3. Left-hand window on this north-facing elevation, is near the peak of the roof gable. The next 2 windows have 12 x 12 sliding sash windows of original design. To the lower right of these, near the party wall and just above the fascia of the shop front is a single, shallow segmental bay with 6 x 6 sashes of original design. The distribution of elements at this party wall is very irregular, and corresponds to an interior level change. INTERIOR: the entire upper floor has been opened to the roof and thrown together to form a shopping arcade. This building forms a most important group with Nos 4-12, 22-32, 36-41 and 43-53 Meeting House Lane (qv), which is the centre of the section of the Old Town known as The Lanes.
