ST2937SE KING SQUARE 736-1/10/121 (East side) 24/03/50 No.10 and attached railings (Formerly Listed as: KING SQUARE (East side) Nos.10-13 (Consecutive) No.14)


House, now surgery. Late C18/early C19. Flemish-bond brick, stone coping to the parapet, cornice, cill band to all first-floor windows and other cills, painted stepped stone voussoirs and doorcase, C20 raised mansard roof with zig-zag tiles and C20 dormers. Double-depth plan. 3 storeys with attic and basement; 3-window range to west front facing King Square, symmetrical 5-window range to south facade. Some crown glass to 6/6-pane sash windows to second floor, 6/9-pane sashes to first floor which has a rectangular cast-iron balcony along the front; 6/6-pane sashes to ground floor and flat gauged brick arches to basement windows and door. Street slopes down to Castle Street on right return (south facade) and semicircular steps lead up to double 3-panel doors with bolection moulding to upper panels under semicircular fanlight with radiating glazing bars; doorcase has reeded archivolt, keystone, pilasters and imposts which rest on blocks with roundels. Windows to this facade are blind except for those above door which are similar to those at front. The rear has bay with curved corners; rear has similar windows to rest except that to ground floor which is early C19 8/8-pane sash. Blind windows to the curves, and wedge lintel to blind door on ground floor. INTERIOR not inspected. SUBSIDIARY FEATURES: pointed railings with urn finials front the basement area. The house is part of a fine late Georgian square built on the site of Bridgwater Castle.
