TQ 2980 NW CITY OF WESTMINSTER PICCADILLY Wl 70/85 (south side) 30-5-72 Nos 207 to 209 (consec) GV II Corner block of bank chambers. 1892-94 by Alfred Waterhouse but following earlier design by John Robinson. Stone faced. Busy, tightly reticulated facade with free handling of classical-Renaissance motifs. Lofty banking hall and mezzanine, 3 upper storeys and dormered attic. 3 bays to Piccadilly, canted corner with entrance and 3 bay return. The corner entrance is framed by free Ionic order supporting a draped sheild and supporters within segmental arched aedicule; secondary round headed entrance to westernmost bay to right with mullion-transomed mezzanine lights; tripartite windows to banking hall. Rusticated pilaster order articulates ground floor and, defining the tiers of stone mullioned upper floor windows, rises through entablature to the shell decorated frieze of 3rd floor sill course, is continued through 3rd floor by monogrammed. lesenes up to bracketed main cornice and rises through attic to be finished off with ornately architectured finials. Breaking from the main cornice a series of segmented pediments crown the window tiers. The attic pinnacles frame fretted panels alter- nating with paired mullion-transom windows.
