TQ2804SE KINGSWAY 579-1/21/61 (North side) No 1 King's Gardens (terrace) including attached railings


House now divided into flats. c1890. Builder J.T.Chapell. Render over brick with bands of terracotta exposed on returns, steeply pitched hipped tile roof, deep overhanging eaves, tall stacks on returns rising from eaves. Plan: double-fronted with long range to rear fronting Grand Avenue. 4 storeys plus attic over basement, 2:1:3 bays, full-height canted bay to right of entrance rising through eaves to terminate in canted dormer with turret, small dormer to left behind wrought-iron balustrade; third floor with pilasters rising from string course, sash windows, segmental-headed openings on second floor, linked entablature, zinc canopy with pierced pelmet to first floor French casements, wrought-iron balustrade to balcony carried on shaped brackets, square-headed sash windows ground floors, original blind boxes to all sash windows, entrance third bay left; fanlight, panelled double doors, half-glazed with ornamental grill approached by flight of steps with cast-iron railing. Long 5-bay right return with lively detailing including oriel balcony with recessed arched-head opening surmounted by ornamental gable with finials.
