5/1 Staples Cottage (formerly listed as 24.11.66 Staples)


House. Late C16, W end and hall range rebuilt Cl?, extensions to E and N later C19, and N lean-to and conservatory c1960. Timber frame on red brick sill (renewed), plastered with panelled fan- pargetting. Steep old red tile roofs. Originally a T-shaped house with C16 2-storeys 2-bay crosswing at S and hall range, rebuilt in early Cl? as 2-storeys, projecting to N with lm wide passage at S end. Also a Cl? one and a half storeys, l-bay service room added at W end of crosswing (now entrance hall) with external gable chimney. Large external E gable chimney with crow steps at E end of larger bay of S crosswing. Hall range extended a bay to N and then by a lower 2-storeys range. N side of crosswing partitioned as passage in timber framing - possibly for an entrance on the E. 3-light and 4-light hardwood mullioned windows with slim metal casements. S front has a gabled dormer in the one and a half storeys W part with heavy battened old oak door up 3 steps with flat hood on small shaped brackets. 2 windows to each floor of crosswing. Hardwood mullioned windows with horizontal proportions. Large red brick chimney with axial flues and crow-step decoration. Shallow catslide roof to E side extension. An impressive and picturesque timber framed house clearly showing the stages in its construction.
