4/29 Albion Warehouse (formerly listed as National Insurance Offices, 12/01/67 (former new Albion Schools))

G.V. II

School, now warehouse. 1861-2. By Paull and Ayliffe. Polychromatic brick with ashlar dressings and slate roof. 11 bays and 2 storeys with projecting stair wings to rear and lower 4-bay wing to left. Italianate style. Projecting plinth, first floor band, white brick striations and bracketed eaves cornice. Front and rear are dominated by a central 3-bay projection which is pedimented and has a round-arched 2-light window with tracery on the first floor. At the rear it is flanked by stair wings which project even further and are themselves pedimented but at the front on either side are elaborate ashlar door surrounds with foliated capitals to columns and a semi-circular hood and dropped keystone. Windows are symmetrically arranged and have 8-pane casements with segmental-brick arched heads and keystones on the ground floor and semi-circular heads on the first floor with impost band and polychromatic voussoirs. Hipped roof. Each end has a pedimented projection. Decorative tower styled like a campanile with a pyramidal roof. The adjoining boundary wall has decorative cast-iron railings (removed to east) on stone plinth and gate posts. Interior:, the first floor is an impressive hall with arched bracing to queen-post roof trusses. Various timber,cast-iron and plasterwork remains.
